Second Quarter Outside Reading Book Review

The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien

The Hobbit is a story of a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins and his adventures to Lonely Mountain. He travels with a his friend Gandalf, a fine wizard and a group of dwarves in search of the dwarves rightful treasure. Along the way they meet and overcome foe and gandalf meets a special someone who will not only change his life but change the world.

"The enchanting prelude. "

This is a story of incredible challenges and amazing settings. You see the characters overcome these challenges stronger and readier then ever. There is a lot of progression on charcters by the way they act and just how the author writes. J. R. R. Tolkien is one of the best description writers. You feel the intensity and anxiety of the charcter. You imagine the settings and charcters like you've known them and scene them your whole life. You feel every little detail from the cool nightly breeze as you walk through leaves to the heart pounding escape from the most wreched creatures that you cound imagine.

"I beg your pardon, I haven't asked for anything!"
"Yes, you have! Twice now. My pardon. I give it you. In fact I will go so far as to send you on this adventure."
"Sorry! I don't want any adventures, thank you. Not today.

The book does have a slow start, but it is worth while. It gives you backround and description so there are no interuptions later on. Soon enough you will find your self on the edge of your chair, heart beating in the intensity. This isn't the easiest to read but this is a great read and I would reccomend this very highly.

The value of Friends and an Ipod

As future leaders and inventors we need to be able to to decide and base decisions on our values and what is important to us.

I plug the earphones into my ears and scan through the covers to find the perfect song to match my mood. I find it, tap the button and begin to enjoy the sweetness of music. The Ipod is a priced enjoyment(~$150).

Sitten around, laughing, eating having fun around a seven foot fire. The fun in laughing until it feels like you've done the hardest ab workout inb the world. Getting beyond full then keep on eating cause you just have to finish those last couple marshmallows. The stories of all the other times youve hung out and done stupid stuff.

Both things bring enjoyment in thier own way. Yet for me this is an easy descion to make. I believe that hanging out with friends beats a portable song anyday of the week.

First Quarter Outside Reading Book Review

The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke

The Thief Lord is about two orphans who who run away to Venice Italy. The they discorvorer a group of other orphans who take take them in and care for eachother. They come to find out the the group is led and funded by a older child who thieves to supply. They get a special offer which leads them on a rollarcoaster of events that leads to the fixing of a magic carousel. this mysteries of the carousel you will have to figure out for yourself.

"Wacky characters bring energy to this translation of an entertaining German novel about thieving children, a disguise-obsessed detective and a magical merry-go-round. The Venetian setting is ripe for mystery and the city's alleys and canals ratchet up the suspense in the chase scenes." -Publishers Weekly

I beleive The Thief Lord was written for the adventure and trials of the children. To have fun and get lost in the book. With excellent details, description and diologue the authors portrays the characters and setting in an interesting way. She makes you feel like you are there and can feel the crisp wind of the waters and hunger of the orphans. Like you are standing right there in Italy going on the the adventures they do.

"Ask the Thief Lord if he would take on a job." The boys looked at one another. "A job?"
"One of my most important clients is looking for a talented man who will - let's say - fetch something for him."

This book although starting slow gets into great adventure and suspense. Coming in the book close minded for not liking mysteries, found the book quite interesting and fun. I would highly suggest reading this book for anyone even those who have not liked mysteries in the past. You never know you might love it.

Messy Situation

Enders Game, Ender Wiggen
The Absolutley True Diary of a Part Time Indian, Junior Spirit
Space

It was a bright spring day as Junior walked home from his graduation ceremony at Reardon High outside the reservation that he swore he would never return to.
Twenty years later we find junior off the reservation and on the planet of Eros working on starships for the international military forces. As he got up and started to go for lunch he ran into a small kid that was admiring the works of the ship, as a PhD in Electrical engineering does not get rid of clumsiness. As he did and the child fell to the ground, he quickly realized who he was. The kid who he had put to the ground, was non other than the great Ender Wiggin, the great IMF commander who had destroyed the bugger fleet when he was only 13. Junior quickly helped him up and pleaded for forgiveness yet all Ender did was brush off and ask about the ship. Surprised Junior stared to talk about the workings of the ship and suddenly they found themselves behind the controls of the massive IMF starship.

Then suddenly the ship jerked and started to lift. Junior realized that Ender had done it. Junior being upfront as he always had been shouted some very crude words because Ender was still young and had never flown a real ship before. Ender knew this was true although he had gone through so many simulations that he trusted himself greatly. Just then Ender hit a few buttons and off into the infinite space they traveled. By then junior had calmed down after seeing the grace and intelligence of the boy as he flew the colossal beast. As they soared junior and Ender talked of the Bugger Wars and Enders Victory, when a couple of lights were set into motion and alarms started to sound. Junior rose and was yelling, and pointing to what Ender should be doing, when he noticed that Ender knew exactly what to do and was so peaceful about it. So he stepped back and let him take care of it.

They landed on a plant far away from Eros and afraid to step out of the ship because of stories of creatures on other lands, they stayed in the ship talked about what to do. Although I don’t think what Junior was doing was considered talking. They decided that Junior would inspect the ship and try to fix whatever the problem was. Ender would search the ship for supplies to exit the ship and find help. So they went off and as Ender searched, he found a couple of galactic suits and some weapons. So he ran to Junior who was not getting anywhere with the problem and they discussed it and decided to leave the ship. So they suited up, grabbed weapons and food, and exited the ship.

The land was similar to Earth yet they had not seen any life. As they grew farther and farther away from the ship, the woods also grew thicker until the could not see 5 feet in front of them. Then Ender tripped on something and was pulled into the ground where he disappeared. Since Junior had nothing to lose and everything to gain from saving a heroes life, he stepped forward where he also tripped and was sent into the ground. When they woke up they were sweating from the extreme heat that had befallen them. They were in some sort of cave that had strange drawings, almost of the uneducated doings similar to caveman on Earth. As they spoke of there predicament they heard faint yet swift footsteps growing closer to them and as it approached there stomachs grew uneasy and ill. And that, my friends, is another story.
